Clean Truck Check FAQ: Testing, Compliance, and Mobile Service
Don’t see what you’re looking for? Call us — we answer the phone.
What is the Clean Truck Check program?
CARB’s Clean Truck Check is California’s emissions compliance program for heavy-duty vehicles. It replaces the prior periodic smoke inspection rules and uses OBD plus periodic smoke tests to ensure trucks meet emissions standards.
What vehicles are required to test?
Almost all non-gasoline heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR operating in California — including out-of-state carriers passing through — fall under the program. This covers diesel, alternative-fuel, and hybrid trucks.
How often do I need to get tested?
OBD-equipped vehicles are tested twice per year. Starting October 2027, that frequency increases to four times per year. We’ll set automatic reminders so you never miss a deadline.
What happens if I fail the test?
You’ll receive a detailed failure report with the exact codes and fault data. Once repairs are completed, we return for a re-test within your compliance window.
Do you offer mobile testing?
Yes — that’s our specialty. Our certified mobile technicians come to your yard, terminal, or job site with all required equipment, calibrated and ready to roll.
How long does the test take?
Average test time is 15–20 minutes per truck. Fleet days move much faster — we line up several units back-to-back so the whole yard is tested in one visit.
Does the program apply to vehicles registered outside California?
Yes. Clean Truck Check applies to both California-registered and out-of-state vehicles operating within California. If you cross the state line, you need to be compliant.
Are vehicles with under 1,000 miles per year exempt?
No. Low-annual-mileage vehicles are still subject to Clean Truck Check requirements. There is no general exemption based on miles driven per year.
Does the program cover hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles?
Yes. Nearly all non-gasoline heavy-duty vehicles — diesel, alternative-fuel, and hybrid — over 14,000 lbs GVWR are covered.
How is my compliance deadline determined if my truck is registered out of state?
For out-of-state vehicles, the compliance deadline is based on the last digit of the vehicle’s VIN. We can help you look up your exact deadline.
How far in advance of my deadline should I test?
A passing compliance test must be submitted within 90 days ahead of your vehicle’s compliance deadline. We recommend scheduling a few weeks before to leave room for repairs if needed.
What changes are coming in October 2027?
Starting October 2027, OBD-equipped vehicles must be tested four times per year instead of two. Plan your fleet schedule accordingly — we’ll help you stay ahead.
Which vehicles need an OBD test?
OBD testing is required for all 2013 and newer model-year diesel engines, as well as 2018 and newer alternative-fuel engines. If your truck has an OBD system that meets these criteria, that’s the test you’ll need.
Which vehicles need a smoke opacity test?
Smoke opacity testing is required for heavy-duty diesel and diesel-hybrid vehicles without OBD, including 2012 model-year and older diesel engines.
Which vehicles need only a visual emissions equipment inspection?
Non-OBD-equipped diesel vehicles, non-OBD alternative-fuel vehicles, and OBD-equipped vehicles all require a visual inspection of emissions control equipment as part of the compliance process.
What counts as an emissions-related component?
Emissions-related components include the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), NOx sensors, and other exhaust after-treatment hardware. All must be present, unmodified, and properly configured.
Where can I see my official test results?
Official results for every test type are posted to your tester’s CTC-VIS account on cleantruckcheck.arb.ca.gov. We send you a copy of the official record once your test is submitted.
Who is allowed to perform an OBD compliance test?
Only testers who have completed CARB’s CTC Tester Training and passed the exam within the last two years are authorized to perform OBD compliance tests. All our technicians are CARB-credentialed.
Who is allowed to perform a smoke opacity test?
Only testers credentialed through CARB’s training and exam process can submit smoke opacity test results to CARB. A regular shop technician or general SMOG-certified tester cannot.
Is the technician certified?
Yes. Your test is handled by a certified Clean Truck Check technician using the required process, equipment, and documentation standards.
Can I request Clean Truck Check testing 24/7?
Yes. You can submit a scheduling request anytime. Appointment confirmation depends on route, location, and fleet needs.
What can cause a vehicle to fail the emissions equipment inspection?
A vehicle fails the visual inspection if any emissions control component is missing, modified, or not in the proper factory or retrofit configuration. We help you identify the issue and get it sorted before re-testing.
What if my Emissions Control Label (ECL) is missing or damaged?
If your ECL is missing or unreadable, you’ll need to contact the engine manufacturer to obtain a replacement label. We can guide you through the process and re-test once the new label is in place.
Don’t risk fines. Stay compliant.
